Personal project

HomeLab

A home server that runs my projects, backs itself up every night and tells me whether the hearth holds.

StatusPrivate, evolving

Small server on a stone plinth under a blue crystal, surrounded by four glowing dashboard panels

What it is

A mini-PC at home that runs several virtual machines: each has its own role, like the rooms of a single house.

It is backed up every night to a separate disk. It also handles home automation, filters ads and shady sites at the network level, and runs automation tools. A private dashboard, Kalheim, shows at a glance whether “the hearth holds”.

It evolves in small batches delivered one at a time, with tests and checkpoints before every change. I learn virtualisation, networking, security and monitoring from it.

Who it is for

For me first: it is my learning ground. For you, it is proof that I can build, back up, monitor and evolve a small complete system, not just fix one.

What it does

  • Hosts my own projects and experiments, at home rather than with a third party.
  • Backs itself up every night, and restoring from a backup has been tested for real.
  • Runs the home automation.
  • Filters the network against ads and shady sites.
  • Automates repetitive tasks.
  • Watches itself: the private dashboard sums up the state of everything at a glance.
